Soil is a very important part of gardening, its what the plants use to eat up those nutrients and turn them into nice foliage or flowers. So creating the perfect mix for your plants is key to success! Read more below...
For me, making my own cacti and succulent mix is the easiest and cheapest method compared to buying ready made compost from the shop or garden centre, its also easier to control soil conditions and drainage to match a specific plant. In my case I make a general Cactus mix made up of Compressed Coco Soil, Compost, Horticultural Sand and Perlite.
What is Compressed Coco Soil?
Coco soil is made from coconut husk which has been shredded and compressed after a few months of sitting in water (usually) Its a cheap resource and here in the UK, Poundland sell a 10 Litre block for £1! Perfect for budget growing.
What does horticultural sand do?
In any soil, sand will always increase the level of drainage, so sand lets the water drain quicker.
So.. What about perlite then?
Great question! Perlite is another way of aiding the drainage in soil and helps to put air into the soil as it is such a light material containing quite a bit of air.
How do I make the cacti and succulent mix?
I personally suggest adding 5 Parts Coco soil, 1 Part perlite, 1 part sand and 2 parts compost, Mix these together to create the perfect soil mix for your indoor plants.
